I would look at which carrier(s)/alliance suits you best based on routes/cost/schedule, then look at which FFP within that alliance to credit to.
I will also echo Mwenenzi's comments that your chance of a free upgrade on international flights on almost all carriers is very close to zero even if you achieve their top membership tier.
