I'm essentially with davistev. Originally, I'd never have considered a trip without a stay of at least a few days at destination. And just about any destination is unique and interesting, especially if you delve into its history. Without the mileage inducement, it would be too easy just to stay home and sacrifice the opportunity to broaden the mind.
Now, I'd consider a purer mileage run if the cost/status mile is under 3 cents, not least because of VDB potential. But I still draw the line at a domestic redeye followed by the entire next day on the plane without a shower. That's torture.
Aside from the destination, the plane ride offers the opportunity to see the landscape and take photographs. That's why I'll always be found in a window seat, away from the wing. And why first class, despite its fine service, can sometimes be a distraction.
