Long ago, early post-merger days, I did have a colleague successfully negotiate away the co-pay for an upgrade. It was a lightly booked ORD-MUC flight, and he was booked in a high (but not Y or B) fare. He asked nicely, and they agreed to waive it. Unusual, but it never hurts to ask.

The emergency landing in YYT was just a bonus
