In short, airlines really are checking visas to protect themselves, not you, because they do fine airlines heavily when they send someone that don't have proper documents.

Second, I really have to say, anybody that travels to another nation should really know the rules.... why do you show up at the airport without even knowing you are safe or not and expect an airline employee to figure it out for you?
