Statistically, one would think that accidents due to pilot error could be more likely after a well publicized crash, although the overall accident rate is so low that this could be difficult to test. I've heard that drivers are more likely to have a second accident after the first one, partly because they can become worried and nervous drivers who lose confidence after the accident, although of course the effect could also be due to the first accident simply indicating that the person is not a very good driver. [I know I tend to be extra careful around cars with obvious dents and other damage.]
