On my other point re. charge cards - what's the dela if I buy my USD at Thomas Exchange? Will there be a charge if I do it on the Gold card? If so, I'm better off just buying it on my HSBC debit card card.
If you get your currency from Amex it is not treated as a cash advance. You just need to weigh up the Amex points re the rate you could get elsewhere as they do not give the best rate.
With respect to getting CCY or using your card abroad I have found that once the 2.99% Forex fee is taken there is not a great deal of difference. Personally I take a small amount of CCY and use my card - although if I am paying I generally use my Post Office card as this has no Forex fee.
