The chip in my passport is broken and does not work in UK "e-passport" gates but I had no problems when I went through the automated US immigration gates at ORD a couple of months ago. I was not diverted for manual processing and the only human interaction I had was a customs officer who was looking at everyone's kiosk printout and asking a couple of questions. The kiosks seem to read the machine readable strip on the passport.
