A bit more information. I provided both boarding passes and very clearly explained it was an aeroplan J itinerary with no available J seats on the last segment. I was told the outbound flight needed to be J on AC and nothing else mattered. I didn't have a lot of time and was just going to grab a quick beverage and snack so I didn't bother asking to speak to anyone else.
