Happens when they realise they can get away with charging 'more' from those who don't bother to check nights separately. Why make it easier for people to get discounts when those actively looking for them, and will only book if they're found, will actually go to the trouble and find them; while those who 'don't care as much' will just go ahead and book at a higher rate? Makes sense from a company's standpoint.
