Discounting fares closer to departure date?

I was looking at the loads on some flights going to and from LAX on the weekend of the 22nd. On planes that can fit 120 people, I was surprised to see that only 15, sometimes 50 people are booked.
Now, if I was to book a seat closer to the actual weekend of the 22nd, my fare would be much higher than if I was to book it in advance, right?
Wouldn't it be smarter for AC to discount fares closer to the date if they know that the flight will go nearly empty?
That might entice people to buy a ticket when they otherwise would have passed it up...wouldn't it?
