But amazingly there is never any weather on the straight in approach track...

It's also noticeable that there is more weather avoiding now than there was say 10 or 15 years ago. That's either down to global warming, more sensitive weather radar or more interest in passenger comfort than in the past. It is interesting though that one aircraft will wander about all over the place avoiding weather left, right and centre whilst the next aircraft four or five miles behind the first will say nothing and go in a straight line.
