Forgot to mention, that I have a connecting flight through Charlotte which will then put me on a CRJ-200 plane. If I remember correctly, with those planes, they pretty much force you to gate check even standard size carry ons. So I will likely need to have it checked below at some point.
In regards to packing it properly, I've done pretty much everything I can in terms of removing the tone arm, cartridge, locking the platter in place, etc. and then bubble wrapping everything and using foam cushions + paper filling.
I'd worry that with shipping, it would have more opportunity to get tossed around than a plane ride so that's why I went with the transport it myself option.
That's not enough. Protect it from crushing. Get a cheap, hard-sided bag at Target or somewhere and pack it inside that.
