I started in December and I expect to have enough airline miles to fly later this year. I am flying alone though (one F ticket, not two). Then again, with 2 people, you can sign up for 2x as many cards, spend 2x as much, fly 2x as much, so it's the same.
125k AA miles + $11.20 will get you a single round-trip first class ticket from the US to Japan on JAL. If you are planning to take advantage of CC sign up offers this is nothing. If you want to earn them the old fashioned way it wil take a while (although 10 years is still overkill)
