I've said it here before, it totally makes sense the 787s will be on American's Asian routes. We all know that with the exception of DFW-NRT and likely now DFW-HKG, American's Pacific flights aren't doing all too well. The all too premium heavy, especially in F class, 777s are the wrong aircraft for flights like LAX-PVG, DFW-PVG, ORD-PEK, and the future DFW-PEK. Just look at MileSAAver rewards. Before United placed the Dreamliner on LAX-NRT and LAX-PVG, the flights were bleeding red ink. Within a year of flying the 787-8 on the routes, United stated they were solidly profitable. Kirby stated on the earnings call that with lower fuel prices, he expects ALL Pacific flights to be profitable for the full year. I still find it hard to believe that continuing to fly the all too premium heavy 777s with 14 F Class seats will be profitable with rather low fuel prices. With it being all but confirmed the Dreamliners will be doing Pacific flying, you can kiss sAAver reward space goodbye and upgrades much becoming much more difficult. With all this being said, I still see DFW-ICN remaining a 777 due to the good demand. Hell, just look at what KE did today with American. DFW-ICN is probably the only Pacific route where American has competition and they are beating that competition.
