Just called to fish for retention offers on the wife's US Air MC. Card open one year, some spend for the initial requirement, then little or nothing for the past few months. Told the agent that we were thinking of closing the account due to the AF and because we had other cards that offered more miles.

Agent offered nothing. Asked if I wanted to close it. I asked if there was anything they could do to keep me as a customer. Nope, bupkis. OK, go ahead and close it. He did. Card now shredded.

So, not everyone gets the offer.

We will probably wait a few days for the dust to settle and apply for another one.
