I should know the answer to your question because I just visited MXP last month, but I cannot recall seeing "transit pax" signs. There is a shopping and seating area in the main terminal inside security, in the core area from which you go to A, B and C concourses. United is at the B concourse. You might be able to get to the shopping area and back to the departing gate without going through full arrival and departure, (there was a passport control station inside security on the fringe of the shop area between the A and B/C concourses for people apparently just transiting, but none between B gates and the shopping area) but I don't know where you would check in for your departure without getting to the checkin counters after arrivals. You might check on arrival at the gate if you can checkin at the gate for departure. There is an LH lounge in the A concourse, a nice hoof from checkin and security and then a hoof back to B. (thru the passport control). There are some websites that have aerials of the terminal layout, showing the Terminal 1 that serves United. My flight arrived at a jetbridge but for my departing flight there was a bus from the gate to the plane. For your information in timing your wait, the boarding for the bus started about 30 minutes before scheduled departure and there were two bus departures from the gate. One was about 10 minutes behind the other. There was a station setup for random searches at the gate, although I only saw one take place.
