I don't believe this is an Australian requirement but might vary by airline. One past flight of mine had me enter the US with no onward trip as I did not know what country I was going to after Australia.

Australia does not have a specific requirement for US citizens that they have to show return travel upon entry. I have heard cases where they have asked for financial proof that they can purchase a return.
