I'm in Canada where costs are higher than in the US for cell phone service, so I'm not commenting on your specific situation just in general on the savings of buying a phone directly, unlocked and without a usage contract.
I actually made a simple spreadsheet. There are a lot of second tier carriers. Pre-paid like straight talk, cricket, metro10, ect. Many piggyback of the cell towers. I need good service, like 4gLTE.
