It allows me to find the cheapest plan for my usage and to switch out SIMs when I travel (which is a significant additional savings on roaming charges/travel packages).

I'm in Canada where costs are higher than in the US for cell phone service, so I'm not commenting on your specific situation just in general on the savings of buying a phone directly, unlocked and without a usage contract.
