Thanks for the responses so far. I won't "need" the bag overnight, but I would never check a bag with an airline overnight
My baggage has spent dozens of nights at Schiphol on overnight lay-overs and has never come to any harm. I don't think the risk is any greater than on a long lay-over during the day.
Returning landside to check your baggage is going to be a lot of hassle. Assuming you're on the flight at 10 am you'll be queuing to get into the country at the peak of the morning long-haul arrivals and you'll then be queuing again to get out of the country at a time when a lot of departing passengers will be doing the same. Waste of time!
