This route is indeed the most direct. Other options (i.e. something weird through Van Ness or Lombard) will face the same traffic issues.
Heck, depending on your schedule restraints, I might just have dinner in SF as a halfway point break and then cross the Golden Gate Bridge when traffic dies down a little. Good luck!
