DL was going route me to ATL, and fly me home from there on Saturday AM. I really did not want to spend another night away from home, so I booked a direct flight on Air Canada at 9:00 PM and got home.
All good, but I had checked a bag that they had to pull, and while I was waiting for it, chatted with another person waiting for his bag off the same diverted flight. They had put him on a United flight direct to FLL. I asked, and this person had no status. It made me wonder why they had done that for him, and not me. Not that I really cared as it was dealt with and the AC flight was about the same price as the refund, but it made me wonder when they would rebook someone on another airline.
A couple of years ago I was on RDU-BOS-LHR with my son, and the RDU-BOS segment was very late due to weather at RDU, and the BOS-LHR flight left the gate as we were deplaning. I walked up to the GA of my original flight, who had already rebooked us on a later flight on AA. She also gave us food vouchers.
At the time, I was gold and my son had no status (coincidentally, he qualified for silver by the time we got back home, but that had no bearing on the rebooking).
