If you don't want to use an ATM card, get some travelers checks at your bank or credit union. Most larger hotels will be happy to cash them for you, as needed. And some stores and restaurants will do so too.
Be sure to budget an extra 10 hours or so to find a place that will cash these dinosaurs.

What's the harm in taking $2,000? Put as much as you can on the credit card and bring the cash home to pay the bill. It's there if you need it, and a nice cash cushion means you won't be worried about it.

I don't have an ATM card, either, although I'm likely to get one before my next Europe trip. It's now virtually impossible to exchange currency in most of Europe.
