I stayed at the SGS last week as part of my search for the perfect Bangkok hotel. The SGS is the best Starwood hotel that I've found so far.

I arrived early for check-in and had particularly good Platinum recognition. We room took maybe 5 minutes for a final check and then was ready. I was given one of the x12 "luxury" suites. The hotel seemed very much orientated to SPG members - All but 4 floors were branded SPG floors which I thought was extraordinary.

As others have said it does feel a lot like two rooms, but the "bedroom" was nice and large by itself and with the extra living room it felt a bit like the residence at the Westin in KL. I didn't see the room pre-renovation, but there are sufficient power points and lots of fancy tech for connecting devices to the in-room systems. Internet was acceptable and probably the fastest I'd seen in Thailand in an SPG hotel.

Everything in the room was fresh and new, though I found the design still a bit "blocky" and like a normal Sheraton to me. Outside of the room the design of the hotel is much fresher with Thai elements. Overall I found it a quite attractive hotel.

The pool was really cold, but the "Thai style" setup was really pretty and the sala food looked good and simple. For people who don't get out of Bangkok, this might be the best view of real Thailand they get and it's not that bad an effort.

I had a few drinks at Barsu on the recommendation of people here which I found a bit meh. The cocktail hours for Platinums are very generous but I was hoping to find my first decent cocktails in Thailand was left disappointed.

I did try out Rossini's (the Italian restaurant) which I was actually impressed by. As I used to live in Italy I can get a bit previous about my Italian food and Rossini's did the trick.

In conclusion I think this is the best Starwood hotel in Bangkok (vs. St Regis, Meridien, W, etc). It's not absolutely perfect and I wish the rooms looked a bit less Sheraton-y, but I'll be using it in the future unless I'm splurging on an MO/ Siam stay (or trying somewhere else new).
