I think the only time I've seen a bank just leave an old credit card as it was after a change of owner was when the numbers didn't have to change. (e.g. When Amex took over the AMP Amex cards.) Just leaving them would mean having Mastercards out there until late 2017, mixed in with all the Visas. Much easier for the bank to just switch them all.
