Only because no other country (at the moment, save for Mexico) recognizes the NEXUS card as a substitute to a passport. Of course, with NEXUS members now eligible for the US GLOBAL ENTRY program, a valid Canadian (or US) passport is needed to use the GE kiosks.

As for OP's question(s), traveling with someone who does not have NEXUS will mean that person cannot use the NEXUS security lane with the NEXUS member. (Same goes when crossing the border by car...all passengers in the vehicle must have NEXUS cards). Same goes for US PreCheck. Bottom line to Q, NEXUS (or Trusted Traveler) number has no impact on AC (or other airline) boarding zone.
