That's funny you say that. Several years ago, a buddy of mine had a long connection at BWI (CLE-BWI-EWR) and checked a bag. He asked me what CO would do with it. I told him CO is low tech, go to BWI baggage claim and watch it come out if you have time. He did, and sure enough, it came out.
Not just CO. Several years ago my brother and I were traveling UA ORD-DEN-ABQ. He had to gate check his bag in ORD; they told him he could retrieve it at the gate in DEN when the plane arrived. The GA at DEN told him it was checked through to ABQ. We get to ABQ, no bag. UA baggage agent in ABQ discovered that it was sitting on the baggage claim carousel in DEN. We had to kill a couple hours in ABQ waiting for his bag to arrive on the next flight.
