If someone is going to spend $20K a year on the card, they are better off getting the reserve and paying the annual fee since they would qualify for the free weekend night each year and would be obviously making the minimum spend.
My email was a little more interesting. In addition to the $20K spend to get Gold status, my email stated that after spending $1K (yes, just $1,000) at Hilton properties, I'll get 10K in Hilton HHonors Bonus Points. (BTW, I also got a card in the mail mentioning both offers.)
I have the Reserve card in addition to the free/basic one (I got the latter to get the bonus points before getting the Reserve), but I may use the free card for the first $1k because if I am right (please correct me if I am wrong) I'll get more points in the end using the free card than the Reserve.
Question, though: even though I have the Reserve card, will I still have Gold status if, when I check in to the hotel, I use the free card? Thank you in advance.
