Qantas charge, or at least used to charge Australian members $50 to sign up to their Ff program.
It was believed in the days of a tight BA/QF tie up that no one signing up to a frequently flyer program would choose to pay the fee, if a free alternative was available.

but, I'd still prefer to be acknowledged as Australian. Maybe someone in BAEC management is still upset over The Ashes
And as for paying to join QF FF, this is commonly discussed on the QF FF Board - those in the know do not pay to join. But, as repeatedly told by some, the AA program is better value and offers more (usually).
