It seems I have a different view of (British politeness) than others.

I think the most polite course of action is to put it up at the first opportunity - i.e. after the safety briefing. Personally I would find it rather rude to leave it down and therefore intrude on my neighbours privacy.

So up it goes, with no explanation and certainly no apology.
