Thai Airways to Cut Routes as Part of Rehabilitation Plan
BANGKOK— Thai Airways International PLC unveiled a rehabilitation plan that calls for the troubled carrier to cut a tenth of its routes in a bid to lower costs and increase revenue.
The revamp of Thai Airways is among the first attempts by Thailand’s ruling junta to stabilize and revive some of the country’s state-owned enterprises since it seized power in a May coup. Junta leader and Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha told reporters that the carrier, Thailand’s first and largest, wouldn’t seek bankruptcy protection, but surgery is needed to keep it going.
The carrier, which is 51% owned by Thailand’s Finance Ministry, lost 9.2 billion baht ($283 million) in the first three quarters of last year, according to the company’s latest filing with the Stock Exchange of Thailand,
and total debt stood at 262.5 billion baht. Thai Airways recorded a loss of 12 billion baht in 2013.
