Makes no sense for UA to be operating 764s with lie flat and AVOD on some routes to Hawaii, and have the other be done by the stripped down 777s with no AVOD or lie flats in J. UA probably had compliants through the roof on the these aircraft. They were flown on some route up to 9 hours with no lie flat, no AVOD, unreliable wifi and streaming content, and no powerports.
Maybe the finally got the message that the 777A retrofit was pathetic.
I think the 764 operations on EWR/IAD-HNL has more to do with range issues going westbound with the 77A. Those routes are nearly 5000 miles and there's nowhere to divert to between the west coast and HNL. I suspect even with the retrofit, you'd still see 764 ops on those two routes. I believe SFO-HNL is simply for aircraft utilization purposes.
