The Renaissance is smack in the middle of it all with a mix of rooms types. Over my dozen stays I've experienced a 90% upgrade rate as a Marriott Plat. (But NO lounge, b'fast coupon instead.)
From rooms with a small balcony to larger corner rooms, I have never been disappointed, except once, and the manager made it right. (Leaking bath with funky shower head.) The views are hit or miss, not many views anywhere in town really but being in the center of town is well worth it. When calling ahead, this is one property where the front desk staff ACTUALLY takes your room request and actually notes it in your reservation and actually strive to make it work for you.
Check-in staff very friendly but be aware that valet parking is a hair expensive. The hotel garage is right across the street, drop and drive to save a few dollars.
Except once, early check-in always honored.
Bathrooms are good size with nice amenities.
Older radios in the rooms with the old iPhone "plugs."
Tip envelopes for housekeeping now left next to the bed (regardless of your philosophy) the housekeeping staff is extremly friendly and competent.
Small refrigerators in every room I've been in.
Bar is right off the lobby with good pours.
Room rates are all over the map... I've had value nights with really low rates and nights where due to work, I needed to be there and felt a notch or two over priced, but location is important and this hotel is a perfect location for all things Charleston.
