You really do need to get in to get good photos of the Taj to be honest. Photos from outside would not do it justice.
You simply have to get inside for the best shots.
Yes, they close it for friday prayers but I can;t recall if we could visit before/after prayers...we went on a Sunday so it was busy but we got in quite early and were on our way back to Delhi after lunch.
We skipped the fort as it was after lunch and there was a huge line to get in..we just took photos ouside the fort and then were on our way.
