If not, we would have been stuck with 2 expensive and inflexible options between NL and BE: Thalys and Fyra. At least now we still have the 2 options: fast/expensive/non-flexible (Thalys) and slow/cheaper/flexible (IC).
No, if you read my post, that is not what I was suggesting. I was suggesting:
  • a proper high-speed train over the high-speed line for travel within the Benelux that also calls at Breda less frequently
  • retain the former Benelux trains that ran over conventional track
  • Thalys for travel further afield

That way, passengers within the Benelux can choose between either a more expensive high-speed option with infrequent stops including travel within just the Benelux, or a slower option that calls at smaller cities (The Hague, Dordrecht, Roosendaal, Mechelen) but offers fixed walk-up prices. Nothing wrong with choice, is here? The decision by NS to eliminate the Benelux train was widely criticised at the time.

And what NS currently offers up as "high speed" is a total joke, if it runs at all (20% of trains are either horribly late or cancelled). The current Benelux train is not a good replacement for a proper high-speed option, for those wanting that, and has only just now come close to the old frequency and reliability.

As the Germans and the French have experience both building and operating high-speed trains, that was my off-the-cuff suggestion. Obviously there are alternatives.

But the NS should be taken out of the picture and simply compete with the Benelux train; they have made a total debacle of the whole thing. They ordered sub-standard trains from an unproven builder; many warned the Fyra would not be up to the task (NS did not listen). Result: the high-speed line was finished in 2009/10 and still only the Thalys runs rather infrequent high-speed services, but that is hardly an option for those only needing to travel to Rotterdam or Antwerp (especially on a daily basis).
