There seems to be a bit of confusion about the EDR cards...
There are a number of reasons you get asked to scan the card at the checkout:
- Total % of EDR card scans vs total amount of customer transactions is one of the core 25ish metrics each store (and register operator) is scored on.
- There are orange special tickets on some items which give discounts only to those who scan the card. (This confuses a lot of customers who think it's a normal special and try to claim scanning policy or when that item is on both a normal special and a EDR special)
- The EDR system sends out bonus point offers to selected customers based on $ spend in a selected department or total shop.
- The EDR system attempts to track buying habits and send out discounts to selected customers which are not advertised in store (the store staff often does not know about these offers). If you've been sent one of these offers, it won't be added to the transaction until the system verifies the card. (I have never gotten any of these. I only ever get bonus point offers [which I mostly don't spend enough in a single transaction to get], or a list of things I've sometimes gotten that are in the catalog that week)
I scan my card more often then it appears some others here do, but I still don't get anything useful. :/
I'm more annoyed that it won't give me my 5% staff discount on $4.99 transactions by does on $5 transactions.
