If you work in a university this is almost unavoidable! But luckily if you smile regularly they get fed up and leave you alone.

wrt the OP, I always kind of figure it's less rude for me to ask to borrow your pen than to make you get up so I can get at my carry-on. The other stuff --waking people up, barging into people -- I have no defense for.
