I was lurking near the podium in CLT some time back hoping to hop on an earlier flight to ORD. It turned out to be overweight and I think that the issue was headwinds. They were actually debating leaving the gate checked bags behind, which would have upset a few people, but they turned out not to weigh enough so they turfed several pax off instead.
On another occasion on an ORD-MSN flight after nobody took them up on buy-out offers they came onto the aircraft and removed a pax. I had assumed that he came out ahead with IDB but apparently not.
