I "guess" you could have tried for the Singapore flight (ignoring the agent, "playing dumb") and if it didn't work out ask to be put back on Delta metal the next day. With exception to being rebooked on another Delta metal alternative; I am very nervous about re-bookings on other carriers in a premium class when I am booked on Delta in a premium class (at a coach fare) using an upgrade instrument. Fare codes tend to rule, and while Delta has best intentions with the re-booking; Singapore still has the "last word" before boarding....
Personally, really wish you had tried for the Singapore flight... would love to have known how it turned out....
In hindsight, and I will probably over think this one for way toooo long, I think I would've been sitting in F had I ignored the agent and gone straight to the Singapore flight. I remember now, though my mind was a bit hazy from one to many Woodfords, that the agent was holding a receipt which showed me confirmed on the Singapore flight and the class of service was F, and right below that was the Delta flight in confirmed J. So close, yet so far away....
