Personal transportation is a hard comp incidental, so it doesn't matter if it's air fare or train fare or any other fare - the casino will treat it the exact same way. Free play is by far the easiest way to get this handled if you're fine with that, and as a bonus you can get far more in free play than you would for transportation.

You mention that you're worried hosts won't help you out, but I don't see why not since you don't ask for much comped off the folio. If all you're asking for is free play, that's easy for a host to handle so just tell him that up front. Worst case, if you don't like what he offers, switch to someone else.
