"In the end, we got charged only 152K miles instead of 172K miles."
What was the exact routing you booked with your ANA miles?
BWI-EWR-DUB-EDI-EWR-DUB. I did calculate the distance a week ago and checked the award chart but perhaps overlooked. The stop at ORD itinerary is not available for my date. I prefer that since the plane would be the Airbus instead of the little Embraer.
Now we have 20K miles sitting in the AMC account till our next trip. If we don't use it, we still can trade it for $200 Amazon gift card by adding 4K AMEX points to it.

No problem.
PS: Now, I think I did calculate only the ORD stop-- not EWR and also I changed fr LHR to DUB, IAD to BWI; that might factor the distance difference enough to lower the req RM.
Just ran a calculation. Total would be 6778 miles. That would fall into the lower rate 38K RM==>152K total. Ha! I had been so swamped w/ many things beside my mother's medical emergency, so the minute I found the availability, I jumped right on the 172K which was programmed deeply in my brain for weeks!!! hehe. My husband & I are OK w/ that. We still have 300K AMEX to spend. It's better that we have over the req RM than short of it. It would be more headache to wait for another transfer from AMEX to ANA. I was a tad nervous after reading a post on ANA forum that the poster in Nov 2014 had problem w/ the transfer for 5 days-2 wks. By the time he got the miles back, the reward seats were not available anymore and he had to spend way more RM on another airline since his dates were fixed. We are kind of more flexible this time.
Thanks again for your great help!
