Why should you have gotten free checked bags for her? She was not on the same PNR. The rules are very clear.... she is not entitled to your benefits UNLESS she is on the same reservation.

The rules are very clear and detailed on the United website.

While it may have been nice if they had extended the benefit to her, they were not required to do it.

I could have checked the two ski bags, checked the large set of luggage, and carried on my smaller luggage. I later learned that boot bags should be checked as an "exception" and do not count towards the total.

The issue was the service there did not properly inform us of any of these policies until it was too late (after I had already checked my carryon, skis and boot bag as normal luggage).
