There is also definitely a skin color bias, based on my experience. Being of Asian descent, I've found that I tend to get better service overseas than my white American colleagues. I also consider myself to be fairly accent neutral, which helps. I do tend to use local terminology (e.g. in UK will refer to "diary" rather than "calendar") when in country.

I've generally referred to the US as "the States," but also take my cues from how the locals refer to it.
