I'd take a small bag with a few necessities including things you need in case you get stranded (i.e., medications, device chargers, and maybe a pair of 'freshness restorer" ) - You just never know if and when you're going to be stranded. TSA or GA who sees you is going to have no idea whether or not you checked any luggage.
