Does anyone have a United number that won't just refer me to the complaints website? I feel like I could get somewhere with a person that has power to do something.
If you raised it with UA, your record was documented at IAD and the agent you deal with now will see that. Use the webform. Make your complaint 2-3 sentences at the most and someone will read it. You will not see any compensation. It is possible that UA will make some small goodwill gesture in the form of a few thousand miles, but even that is unlikely if you miss the flight.
Bottom line is that unless the delay was within UA's control, they simply don't provide hotels and the like.
It would have made no sense for Operations to hold the flight as the likelihood that your seat was given to an overbooked/standby passenger.
