I don't agree. You can take a fantastic trip staying in the US without spending a full day+ of travel, dealing with major jet lag and spending a fortune on airfare.

I like 6rugrats suggestion of visiting Yellowstone. There are hotels there; no camping required. Or try Washington DC, Boston or Chicago - plenty of great activities for kids.
