Surely it is done on a case by case basis where some members of the family have different scheduling constraints, or some may have a different starting or ending point for work or school. In one case I know of, the family had airline miles on two different airlines/alliances, where they had enough on each to buy award tickets for only part of the family. So part of the family used award tickets on one airline, and the other part of the family used award tickets on the other airline.
