We had to take first class from to DTW through to HNL, so our lavish experience is running an extra $944 PP. Ouch!

That's the best advice!! To sit in the Upper Deck of a 747 is like no other experience. If you're doing this both ways, I suggest sitting on the K side both ways -- that way you'll see both sides. If you're only doing it one way, sitting on the K side will give you views of Diamond Head, Waikiki Beach etc. as you approach landing. You will have 3 windows per seat. UD is the best-- 2 toilets; 2 FAs; pilots with you... It is like you have your own personal jet! Enjoy! I have not had a bad seat in the UD.
