Not sure which station is nearest to where you will be staying in Tribeca, but it's going to be along the 1,2,3,A,C,E lines. Using any of those trains (except the E which goes to WTC), I would suggest going
downtown to Fulton St, then transferring to an
uptown 4 or 5 express to 86th street. (Note that if you take the 1 train from Canal or Franklin, you'll need to switch to a downtown 2 or 3 at Chambers St or you will end up at South Ferry.)
The MTA recently spent upwards of $1 billion revamping the Fulton St station, so take a few minutes to looks around if you have time to spare
