Are these fares not a result of the basic economic function of supply and demand?

"Affordable" airtravel is not a right. Live in a more remote/less populous area, expect to pay more, for many things.

If the fares were so high, I am sure that a competitor would have stepped up to the plate.

Again, AC bashing is a favourite Canadian pastime.
